The King Country Rugby Union (KCRU) board has recently appointed Taupo man Kieran Hema as its new general manager.

Hema, 38, replaces former KCRU general manager Kurt McQuilkin, who resigned from his post in July after almost four years in the role.

He takes the KCRU reins following several years as logistics manager at local dairy processor Miraka, where he said he gained leadership experiences which helped broaden his perspective.

Hema said he was excited to bring "his passion for innovation, strategic growth and fostering a culture of excellence" to KCRU.

"I'm looking forward to fostering relationships at all levels, being able to support our KCRU team to grow the game and provide opportunities for higher performance. I'm committed to holding the vision, values, and proud history of King Country Rugby."

Raised in Mangakino and Taupo, Hema has coached King Country age-group teams in recent years, where he gained an appreciation for the work KCRU staff do and was particularly looking forward to supporting the growth of the community game.

"It's about people and positive impacts. I was raised in Mangakino and Taupo and have always had a sense of connection to KCRU," Hema said.

"I've had the privilege to volunteer in community rugby, and seeing the level of care and commitment the operations team provides in the widespread rugby community is inspiring."

"The appointment panel were impressed with Kieran’s proven leadership ability and style, and his commitment to King Country Rugby being home-grown and based. He knows our region and the challenges we face," the statement said.

"He replaces Kurt McQuilkin who did a lot for KCRU in his time as general manager and we are confident Kieran will continue the good work Kurt started."

Hema will officially start as KCRU general manager in mid-August.
